Upgraded technology and a new interior will help it stay competitive. It has a new rival in the Ford Bronco Sport, but also costs less than most iterations of the Ford. The Compass Trailhawk, with its 8.6 inches of ground clearance and Jeep Active Drive Low 4×4 system, remains the rare compact crossover with real off-road ability. The Compass’ new updates should go a long way to making it a more competitive player in a fierce segment, but the crossover’s pokey powertrain still remains. While the pandemic caused much of the slump, the Compass’ flaws were highlighted by newer or updated competitors like the Kia Seltos and Mazda CX-30, and its distinct off-road character is now challenged by the Ford Bronco Sport. But in 2020 sales slid to 107,969 units as both the Compass and its larger sibling, the Cherokee, experienced some of the biggest drops in the mostly resilient compact crossover segment amid the fallout from Covid-19. Sales more than doubled to 171,167 that year, according to Motor Intelligence data. The second-generation Compass was introduced for model year 2018, and its new looks quickly banished memories of its dated predecessor. Jeep has been paying attention, and the refreshed 2022 Compass, unveiled today at the Chicago Auto Show, brings a vastly improved interior, subtle tweaks to its muscular visage and some desirable new tech features. What do they like least? Its plasticky, low-rent cabin and unrefined, tech-absent feel. Jeepīuyers like two things best about the Jeep Compass: when properly equipped it comes with real off-road ability (a rarity among compact crossovers), and its close, yet miniature, resemblance to a Grand Cherokee. Though not a big change, the revision looks like a scaled-down version of the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. The exterior changes to the 2022 Jeep Compass include revised front and rear styling, new wheels and painted lower body sections and fender flares (formerly, they were black plastic).
